The Pinon Café, Payson, AZ – July 8, 2018
by El Presidente
Let’s get the obvious out of the way right now. It’s hot! With that said, July’s breakfast was held in the cooler temperatures of Payson. For me, this meant leaving my house in Buckeye just after 7:00 AM. It was already in the high 90’s at this time. I met up with fellow board member Todd at the Chevron across from the Ft McDowell Casino and road together up The Beeline (SR87).
The further north we got, the cooler it was. I was really looking forward to rolling the that valley that usually gets really cold in the winter time but it actually got hotter there. I guess in the summer, it will hold the heat in while in the winter it holds the cold air. Ugh! We were able to keep an entertaining pace. Only one DPS car on the way up but with a customer already. He had a Pontiac Fiero pulled over. Incredible that a car that old could be speeding, but maybe it was pulled over for being a fire hazard!
When we arrived at the Pinon Café, half of our group had already arrived and were seated in the back room which we had all to ourselves. The food was good, but the cold drinks were awesome! After breakfast, the choices were continue riding in the cool elevation or head back to the valley before the heat of the day. Most of us decided on the latter and just headed back. I was tempted to roll over the the Salt River Canyon and come home that way, but that would have put me back in the Phoenix valley at around 3-4 PM, the hottest part of the day. No thank you, straight home for me! See you next month in Yarnell!
