Ajo Ride Recap

GO AZ Motorcycles Peoria

The last ride of 2022 started with a brisk morning ride to the start point at GO AZ Motorcycles in Peoria. After a brief rider’s meeting, we all set out for Ajo, a charming little town just north of the Mexican border along Arizona State Route 85 featuring a traditional town square where the restaurant that hosted us for lunch was located.

Though Ajo was the destination for our group, it was all about the ride to get down there. Right after leaving the dealership, we hit short stretches of the Loop 101 and I-10. That was it for freeways for the rest of the ride! After getting off at the Avondale Blvd exit, we headed south and rolled past Phoenix International Raceway where they were holding a Spartan Marathon Race. Interesting to see people jumping around through obstacles caked with mud as we rolled by.

We then turned toward the Estrella Mountains and rolled up through the community up in the mountain range then headed west through southern Buckeye. After crossing SR85, we got on old US80 and rolled through the farming community of Arlington. We had to do some weaving around on the route because of a road closure, but after getting back on course, we crossed the Gillespie Dam Bridge and shortly turned south towards Gila Bend.

At Gila Bend, we crossed under I-8 and continued south towards Mexico on SR85 rolling past Border Patrol checkpoints. Once we entered Ajo, we all parked in the town square where an art show was wrapping up. Our lunch stop and the end point of our ride was Tacos El Tarasco. I’ll have to say, lunch was excellent and received excellent service despite it appearing to be a one man show. From what I understand, the owner was the waiter, cashier AND cook! The food was excellent and came out in a timely manner for our group of 19! And we weren’t the only ones in the restaurant! Kudos and highly recommended!

It was great to see all the familiar faces along with some new ones, including an Ajo local that met us up at the start at GO AZ and simply road home with us! This was a great, fun and relaxing ride to finish out the year. Now I’m off to figure out who’s receiving and award this year! Until next time!
